Client Updates

We love to receive letters, pictures and emails from our clients updating us on the horses they have purchased or bred through our farm. With so many of our "children" out in the world, keeping track of them is a daunting task. It is very gratifying to see so many of them doing so well and living up to their owner's dreams. It certainly makes all the effort, planning, dreaming and occasional heartache worthwhile!

Here are some of our favorite updates...

Hi Mo,

Foaling season is here, and youre probably up to your eyeballs. It looks like youve got a bunch ready to hatch right about now. Good choice of theme for this year, and I cant wait to see pictures of your latest additions!

Its been quite a while, so I thought you might like an update on the kids. Theyre all fine and growing. Gladstone finally has enough muscle to look like a grownup at 8; I gritted my teeth and came up with the courage to put the stick on him this winter hes 17-3 and so we can safely say hes almost 18 hands. In spite of the ridiculous height, hes very balanced & athletic. I almost gave the horses up completely this winter, after losing my Dad, who was my greatest fan & supporter. But I know thats not what he would have wanted, so I got after it again.

One of the things that helped get me back in the saddle was when Gladstone and I were selected to ride for Region 9 in the USDF Adult Clinic with Jane Savoie. Im sure you know what a wonderful speaker and communicator Jane is, so you can imagine how honored I felt to be selected. We had a wonderful weekend in Louisiana, complete with good Cajun food.

Friends & I enjoyed ourselves in Las Vegas for the World Cup, then it was back into high gear at home, getting ready for the shows in Arkansas last weekend. It was worth it, since we had a great show. Once again, I took 3 Gold Luck offspring to a show and lived to tell about it!

At the First Annual ASBA (Arkansas Sport Horse Breeders Association) Sporthorse Classic under Bill Solyntjes, Ghypsy was 2nd place in the 2 year old fillies, with an overall score 72.6%. After the show, Bill told my husband that he really, really liked her, but shes at an awkward stage of development. This was reflected in her conformation score, which is what pulled her overall down. General Impression score was 7.5 with comment of pure basic gaits quiet temperament.

Our little rising star, Gholfer, started his day by winning the 2 year old colts & geldings class with a 76.2%. He went on to win the Colt Championship, so hes now qualified for the USDFBC championships in the fall. And to put icing on the cake, he ended up as Reserve Champion of the show! He got an 8.0 for his walk, and a 7.8 for General Impression with comment Shows quality movement and willing attitude. While we were waiting for the ribbons to be presented, Bill approached me and told me what a nice horse I had, and said that Gholfer was the only horse he (Bill) had seen at the show who really moved through his back. Sounds like a dressage prospect to me!

Not to be outdone by his younger half siblings, Gladstone was entered in the ADS Country Classic I & II. We finished my Bronze Medal on our first ride under Bill with a 62.562% at 3rd level test 1. (Its only taken me 40 years to get it done!!!) Gladstone is the love of my life he gives me that first horse feeling. Our ride may not have been something to set the dressage world on fire, but for me it was one of those rare, magical moments. When we halted for our final salute, I didnt know whether to shout or cry. It was an emotional moment, and it felt like my Dad was there, sharing it with me; to get the score we needed for our Bronze was just icing on the cake.

Our other rides were also quite good; a qualifying score for GAIG at 3rd 3 from Bill (60.930%) and we finished the weekend with a good ride for Arlene Rigdon (61.025%.) What makes it even better is knowing that we have all the pieces in place. As long as we both stay sound, our Silver medal is in striking distance. Gladstone does all the tempis (even 1s) and he just needs a little more strength to polish the pirouettes. As soon as I can figure out how to count, were moving up to 4th level.

Granville didnt get to go to the show, since hes getting started back under saddle. Ill report on his progress later, but you might like to know that hes as elegant and beautiful as ever.

Bobby Morse, who handled the young horses for me, asked me to pass along a hello to Tiffany from him.

Back to work for me. Take care of all those wonderful babies & dont wear yourself out too much!

Lyn

My horse of a lifetime for sure. I've never ridden a horse before who learns this quickly and loves his job!

Ghuitar is returning to work after a pasture injury forced some R&R time off for 6 months in 2005 and we are hoping to show at Third Level sometime this year. After 6 weeks back under saddle he's regaining his condition and his lateral work is fabulous!

It's so good to have the big guy back!

Mo,

Just a quick update now. Ghlycerine just got back from the 2 day Morven Park Hot to Trot Show I and II. She was 3rd in the Materiale with a 78% and 79% (behind Willow Rose[in top 3 for Materiale in the US in 2005] and BW Callista[Hilltop Farm horse with lots of under saddle experience]) both days. The first day's class had 4 horses. The second day there were 7 horses (a Weltmeyer, Contucci, Sandro Hit, Gold Luck, Feurst Gotthard, Rienzi, ??don't remember). The 1st day class, we had to to lengthenings and sitting trot. The next day, (diff judge) everyone rode around in medium/lengthened gaits the whole time (Tami Glover from Hilltop warned me in advance as she rode in an earlier class both days). Glissy was great in the big group of horses. That says a lot for a mare who was at her first undersaddle show and never gets ridden with other horses in the arena in general. The majority of the riders were professionals, and this was my first Materiale class ever, so I was quite pleased.

In hand, she won her 4 yo class (scores of 79% and 79.5%) and was Mare Champion and Res Mare Champion. She was SOOOO tired though and really didn't show well by the Mature horse championship. She actually showed an excellent walk, but her trot didn't have the UMPF needed for the championship ring by that round.

Off to Fair Hill with her next weekend. I think it will help her that the in hand classes are on Sat and the under saddle Materiale is on Sunday. At Morven, the undersaddle classes were first thing, and by the in hand time she was pretty zapped. Also, I haven't mentioned to you, but Ghale was 2nd in her 3 yo filly class at Dressage at Lexington with a 74.3%. She was very good in the Championship ring too, but maybe next time we will qualify.

Hope you are well,
Kris

Hi Mo! sure was great to see you today and "catchup"...I have been meaning to call you for the longest time, but have been doing so much traveling with the judging...well, you know...anyway after her debacle in that first test (which turned out to still be a respectable 62.7%!) Galena redeemed herself in First 3 with Anita Owen...and got a 71.7%...Anita LOVED her! Also, I found a head shot of Graptolite (by Gold Luck out of my Thoroughbred mare)...he was probalby only 4 at the time, but he basically looks the same...that baby face will probably look the same at 20! God willing! Anyway, his stats are: TR1 62.27% and TR2 69.23% and that was at Applewood Farm...then yesterday he went to Hawk Hollow and did a TR2 with 72.69% and TR4 71.15%...those were his first shows ever. I am in heaven that he has made it into the show ring! I will drop the picture in the mail to you tomorrow...I am sure Sue won't mind if you use, as long as you give her credit. Talk to you soon...I will check your website to see the current changes...talk to you soon. Cindy

7/27/08 Just thought you'd like to see a recent photo of her. In this picture she's 2 years 6 weeks old...this was taken back on April 29. Keep in mind, I'm 5'6''. She's grown since this picture! Sincerely, Kristen 6/2008 Hey! My name is Kristen Millington, you don't know me yet but I currently own the horse you bred named Gigi! I noticed that Michelle had mentioned me on your site, so I decided to get in contact with you in case you were interested in knowing about her! She's doing great! I have started round pen work with her and she'd really catching on, she's a very smart little mare! The very first time I put a saddle on her back and girthed it up, she did not even flinch! I have started calling her a different name, but have kept her registered as Ghidgette. Her new name is Rheannin...Rhea (pronounced Ray-ah) for short. I just wanted to let you know that you definitely know how to breed them! She is the most gorgeous mover (everyone's jaws drop when they first see her trot!) and such an athletic horse! She has this bad habit that I hope she'll grow out of, but it really portrays how talented she is! She gets very jealous when I pay attention to my other horse, and to show her disapproval she puts her foot up in her feed bin! This is amazing because her feed bin is between 3 and 4 feet from the ground, and she does it like it's nothing to her! My friend told me I should teach her the Spanish walk because of it! She has talent beyond any horse I could have ever dreamed of owning! I had originally purchased her due to her jumping ability, I have always had a dream of taking a horse to the Grand Prix jumper level...and I feel she may have the talent for it! I hadn't looked at her originally because I thought she was a dressage horse, but then a friend of mine told me about the time she jumped out of her paddock. She told me how before she was even a year old yet that all of the horses were running around and headed straight toward the gate...all of them slammed to a halt except for Gigi! My friend said she went sailing on over (with a foot to spare) in absolutely perfect form with the greatest of ease! She landed on the other side, trotted back and forth a couple times trying to figure out what happened and how to get back with the other horses, then just stopped and started grazing. The jump did not even phase her, and the fact that she was loose and separate from the others was not of any concern to her!! I measured the gate afterward and it was 4'6'', so she had jumped about 5'6'' when she was still just a weanling! I just can not say enough about how wonderful of a mare she is! I am planning to take her to her 3 year old inspection at the beginning of next year. Like I said, I purchased her with intentions of turning her into a jumper...but her movement just screams dressage so I can't ignore that! I plan to teach her both jumpers as well as dressage, I'm sure she will excel in both! I'm sorry for such a long email, it's just that whenever I start talking about this mare I can't seem to stop! If you're at all interested I could get you a few pictures of her...that way you can see how lovely she's become as well as how big she's getting! I believe she's about 16.2 or 16.3 already, and only about 2 years and 4 months old! She's gonna be huge! Sincerely, Kristen

Mo, I just wanted to let you know that my Sir Donnerhall filly out of my Loerke mare was presented to the GOV this past Monday. She was not only a premium filly but some of the judges comments included, " if this filly was in Germany she would be an Elite Foal Auction candidate", " she is among the top foals we have seen in Germany". You can just imagine that I am so proud of her, they also loved the mom. I am now standing a German Riding Pony Stallion and having a ball with him. He'll be at the Dressage at Lexington show, perhaps I'll see you there. Thanks again for your advice. Sincerely, Lou Rascoe Longview Farm __________________________________________________

August 2004

Hi Mo,
I hope that you and the kids are doing well, and getting a breather after breeding season.

It was really fun to see both my boys on your website. Thanks for giving Gladstone his own page. It's really neat to tell my friends that they can look him up.

Attached are some pics of Granville taken yesterday at 7 weeks. We tried hard to catch his action, so you can see what a lovely mover he is. Of course, he only wanted to run and buck or stand still. I'm still trying to get one of his lovely, springy trot. I've also attached a few photos of Gladstone taken with my 6'2" husband last week after a show. Someday, I'll try to get a decent under saddle picture of him. (It's been hard tying to coordinate a photographer at a time when both Gladstone and I are tidy and the outdoor footing and weather are decent.)

The show was held as part of a large Morgan show in Tulsa, and amateurs and professionals were put together. Even so, Gladstone acquitted himself well, earning a second place with 68.46% in Training 4 and winning First 1 with a 69.26%. We had needed one more score at Training Level to qualify for our year-end awards, so this should be our last time out at Training level. The only exception will be the Region 9 championships, where I hope we will do well, even though the competition is fierce.

FYI, I asked USEF why Gladstone wasn't listed under Gold Luck on the leading sires list. They corrected it, and Gold Luck moved from #62 to #44 after GSs scores were put in. (And Gold Luck had moved up again to #38 last week.) Let's hope the kids keep doing their daddy proud!

Keep in touch,
Lyn

Hi Mo,

I wanted to let you know how another Gold Luck offspring is doing. Gibson Girl is a 1999 foal. She is by Gold Luck-Bellefleur/Bordeaux. I took her to her first recognized show in Nov. and she won high % score award at Training level on both days. One of the judges wrote "lovely mare with a good future." Gigi was so composed for a young horse. She is the first horse I have bred myself and raised and it has truely been a rewarding experience. She was easy to break and is very naturally balanced. She has a wonderful work ethic and has a sweet personality. I'll certainly keep you informed on her progress. Continued luck with your stallion.

Hi Mo, I was really happy with Julia (for her first ever clinic off the farm for a clinic with Rick Klaassen) - she was a v.g. girl for the lesson. I think she's just going to need time to grow into herself and she's going to be really fun. At least she doesn't still look like a yearling like she did when she went to Kelly's (to be broke to saddle). :-)

Grandera  2004 Hanoverian Filly
 sire  Gold Luck      dam
Owned by:   Kathleen McDermott

Hello Mo,

I took Grandera to a breed show clinic with Jos Sevriens, Judge for Holsteiner Assoc., earlier this month. Jos was impressed with Grandera's trot and ability to use her hind end. He also liked her topline. He used Grandera as a demo compared to some Holsteiners. Jos preferred her back, more equal to her shoulder and croup and felt she would be successful at dressage. Jos scored her 74%.

I took Grandera to HITS also. We did not do so well. The mud was horrific. Some of the breeders hired two handlers to stand at the top triangle corners with lunge whips to get the horses to move. It was a slippery mess. Grandera received 69.9 in the Sport Horse class and 70.4 in the Hanoverian class. I noticed a slight bias to smaller horses, she is 15.3. Although she had the second largest amount of muscle mass to any other entry in the class. She is going to be very muscled.

We had a great time and it was a good learning experience for us both. Grandera was very well behaved. Just a stepping stone to the start of dressage shows in the spring.

She has a wonderful ground covering walk and trot. I expect the canter will as well when her shoulder catches up to her croup.

(waiting for pictures from the photographer)

Regards,

Kathleen McDermott

Golden Rule  2002 Hanoverian Colt
sire  Gold Luck      dam  Fine Tune

Hi Mo,My name is Ami Holt and I'm writing for a couple of reasons. The first is that I have one of Gold Luck's 2002 colts (I leased the mare Fine Tune from Lucile at Honey Locust to get the 2002 foal) and my husband and I are so so proud of him. We're starting our own small Hanoverian breeding farm and this colt was our fist baby and wow were we lucky! I'm sending you a couple of pictures as I thought you may be interested (remember they're just backyard snapshots so not the best quality in the world). We named him Golden Rule (Lucile has been very good to us and I thought this name would represent how she has helped us - living by those Golden Rules of life...) "Goalie" as we call him at the barn is so well tempered, has great movement and confirmation and just loves attention. We're hoping he'll make a stallion one day. Last year at the inspection he was named champion colt and the judges said "he showed the stamp of his sire". Anyway, enough bragging :) I just thought you'd like to see one of your babies....

The other reason I'm writing is that I've gotten a couple things from the Mid-Atlantic Hanoverian Association and am interested in what this association is involved with as I think I'd like to become a member.

Mo,
I just wanted to drop you a line about Smitty (aka Ghreenland).

My vet told me not to start him until this fall, which I did. He is progressing well and now lunges (walk, trot, canter) with a snaffle and with the "german neck stretcher" at times. I have also stood next to him in his stall waving my arms and legs around and even placing a foot on his rump and neck. He was unimpressed. He has had a saddle on (no reaction, he was too busy eating my friend's shoe). The only thing that has gotten him the least bit excited was the first addition of boots on his forelegs and for the first time I saw his trot. Wow. He even lunged while they were working on the roof in the indoor arena without incident. But he is no deadhead, just very sensible for a baby.

He is a big food piggy though! He now has his first bridle and as soon as I get some pictures I'll email them to you. What a wonderful boy. Mark is very eager to come and look at the babies as soon as they "hatch" (his word) as he feels sorry that I lost out on dhaphne due to his slowness. So, expect us in the spring when the babies come. I am looking for a broodmare prospect that I will also ride and love. Thank you for your breeding efforts. I can't wait to have another.

Happy holidays to you and yours. Give all the horses a pat from me,

Sandhill

Hi Mo-

After almost two years as a pasture ornament due to my pregnancy and the subsequent birth of my daughter, I sent Brit to Danielle Gavriluk for training. He was with Danielle for about three months and she and her team did a fantastic job with him; I could not be happier. She said he has an excellent temperament and was a fast learner. He is now back home and we are in training with my instructor, Jennie Meyer. I am having the best time riding him and end up having a huge stupid grin on my face each time I am in the saddle. He is smart, willing, energetic without being stupid, and as always, a comedian on the ground and in his stall. It is really neat to be riding the horse I raised from a baby. He ended up being a liver chestnut and is currently 16 3" and pretty substantial in size. I will forward a photo which I am sorry to say is of hideous quality as it is a still frame from a video. Hopefully I will have better photos to send soon.

Take care,
Allison
